Internship Highlight!

Library Internships! Summer 2026!

General Information

The Central Virginia Regional Library system, which includes the Farmville, Buckingham, and Cumberland locations, is offering internship and volunteer opportunities for students during its summer programming.

The library is seeking two interns over Summer 2026

or up to three volunteers per weekly activity.

While these opportunities are unpaid, grant-funded stipends may be available to eligible students through Longwood’s Center for Career Success. Additional details will be shared via email in the coming weeks.

Specific Positions

Summer Program Helpers (Thursdays, 2–4 PM)

Students interested in hands-on experience may volunteer or intern as helpers during the library’s weekly Thursday summer programs for children. Each Thursday from 2–4 PM, the program typically includes a craft or special activity along with a scavenger hunt.

Interns and volunteers may assist by:

  • Helping distribute craft materials

  • Handing out scavenger hunt clipboards

  • Assisting children during activities

  • help design and lead other activities

Examples of other activities include:

  • Reading themed jokes or short stories

  • Leading a short educational demonstration related to the weekly theme

  • Running a small interactive game or activity

Students who wish to lead an activity are encouraged to meet with library staff earlier in the week or the same day to plan. Students who help plan and lead activities may earn approximately 8–10 internship hours per week, depending on their level of involvement.

Creative Opportunities (Theatre, Music, and Storytelling Students)

Students in theatre, music, or related programs may also be interested in assisting with puppet stage activities, which can include:

  • Creating puppets

  • Developing short storylines

  • Performing puppet shows during the program

These activities help engage children while groups rotate through the main craft activity.

Special Event – Museum Week Mystery Program
During the final week of programming, the library plans to host a “Night at the Museum” mystery event, in which children work together to solve the theft of a museum artifact.

Students in theatre or performing arts may be interested in participating by dressing as historical figures and helping bring the story to life. A script is currently being developed.

  • Estimated commitment: about 4 hours

  • Tentative date: Week of July 27 (likely July 31)

  • Approximate number of interns needed: up to 10
